Can We Help This Spanish Telenovela?
In today’s hyper-connected world, Spanish isn’t just a language—it’s your passport to thriving in a shifting global landscape. As the trade war between China and the USA rattles economies and disrupts futures, why not take control?
Spanish and the U.S.-China Trade War: Could learning this powerful language be the key to rewriting the story—your own telenovela? In Spanish? Of course! Why? Well!… Drama is our thing! (¡Nos encanta el drama!)
The U.S.-China Trade War: The Drama Continues…
¡Sí! El drama continúa…. While the U.S.-China trade war continues to create economic uncertainty, it’s also a reminder that staying ahead in such a world means embracing new tools, like learning Spanish.
Living in a globalized world means every ripple—whether it’s tariffs, disrupted trade routes, or rising chicken prices—can impact industries and relationships everywhere—incluso con los pollos. Now you understand why El Pollo Loco is really Loco!
Yes! Even Chickens Are Pissed!
Oh, and chicken—yes, even the chickens are getting caught in the crossfire. They don’t want to dance ¨La canción del pollo¨ anymore. Thanks to tariffs, U.S. poultry exports to China have been affected, and let’s just say the chickens aren’t exactly thrilled about it. They always seem to get the short end of the stick, no matter who’s winning the trade war.
Could Spanish be Your Secret Weapon in This Trade War?
Absolutely, yes! Amidst tariffs, economic battles, and disrupted trade routes, learning Spanish could be your secret weapon (tu arma secreta) in staying ahead, connecting with new markets, and navigating the complexities of a changing world.
The Skinny on the Ongoing Trade War
Many products that Americans enjoy are made in other countries, where materials and labor are cheaper. This is what makes globalization so attractive for businesses—and often cheaper for consumers. But there’s a catch. What is it? Yes! You guessed it right….
Tariffs Imposed on China
Now, tariffs have been imposed on Chinese products that include steel, iron, electrical machinery (like phones), and railway products, including automobiles.
Made in???
Everything you see with a “Made in China” (Hecho en China) label, or elsewhere that is not the U.S., is now potentially suspect to a tariff, or a tax. Companies like Apple (and many others) often gain colossal profit margins to source labor and parts in China
La Guerra comercial con China
In an attempt to strengthen U.S. domestic interests, create jobs, and stimulate the economy, President Trump has gone full-scale bananas in pushing China to pay more to produce and ship goods like electronics, phones, toys, televisions, furniture, clothing, and even animatronic Elvis Presleys.
Being Spied on by China
Tensions have also affected technology. The Chinese company Huawei has raised concerns, with U.S. intelligence warning against using Huawei phones due to possible surveillance risks by the Chinese government. If you own a Huawei phone, make sure your underwear pic is hot—just in case. Use a banana if you must.
An Arm of the Chinese Government?
The reason the intelligence community is so paranoid is that Huawei was founded by a former engineer in China’s People’s Liberation Army and has been described by U.S. politicians as “an arm of the Chinese government.”
Chickens, Still Pissed Off!
¡Y El Pollo still Loco! The ongoing U.S.-China trade war is affecting industries, consumers, and even tourism— costing American’s money. But let’s not forget: the chickens still haven’t forgiven us.
The Beginning
While campaigning for the office of the President, Donald Trump wrote in 2016 that “We cannot continue to allow China to rape our country, and that’s what they’re doing. It’s the greatest theft in the history of the world.”
Anytime the word “rape” is used, it doesn’t suggest holding hands, “good game” butt-pats, or skipping in fields. It’s serious business.
Xi Wins Big at Mar-a-Lago
After being elected U.S. President, Xi Jinping visited Mar-a-Lago in Florida, and he and Trump agreed to set up a 100-Day Action Plan to resolve their differences. They also participated in a thumb war, and fashion show, and played Tetris. Xi won every contest.
So, what began as a tentative plan after some flatulence from the hearty steak dinner, it has now turned into an almost full-blown trade war.
Not so Fast!
On March 02, 2018, President Trump tweeted that “trade wars are good and easy to win.” The top liked response to that tweet by Aaron Gould stated, “your simplistic view of such a complex subject shows how incompetent you are and how badly you lack any leadership ability.”
Whether or not you agree with either perspective, the current trade war has affected many industries and consumers alike.
The Largest Trade War
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce warned that this current dispute could lead to “the largest trade war in economic history to date.”
We are currently on Day 342 (as of 06/12/19) of the U.S.-China trade war, and it doesn’t appear there is an end in sight.
America First!
While President Trump intends to create jobs, protect the US domestic industry, and avoid rape, these efforts are taxing for all parties involved.
These tariffs have been an ongoing effect of his ‘America First’ agenda and getting more products made in America. He tweeted that he is “a Tariff Man.” He should also include “wall man,” “kitty grabber,” and “mal hombre,” too.
What’s a Tariff?
¡Simple, es un arancel! Yes, arancel is Spanish for tariif! But my question is do you know what a tariff is? NO? Let’s explain it: Imagine the government slapping a price tag on everything that comes from overseas.
That’s a tariff! It’s a tax on imports that jacks up the price of foreign goods, pushing you to buy more “Made in the USA” stuff instead.
What Are Tariffs Good For?
But wait, there’s more! Tariffs are also used to punish countries that play dirty—like dumping their products at dirt-cheap prices. In other words, it’s the economic equivalent of giving a timeout to a naughty kid.
Bottom line? Tariffs make your shopping cart a little heavier, and your wallet a little lighter. So, that fancy imported gadget? Yeah, it’s about to cost you more. Is China happy with this? Of course: Not!
China Retaliates!
China’s response? Tariffs on U.S. goods like lamb, beef, pork, vegetables, coffee, tea, and more. Yes, even your morning latte is now part of this international showdown. As for pork? Let’s just say Babe isn’t thrilled either—but no, I’m not talking about your ex. This is another pig!
Time to Raise Your Own Pollo Loco!
Time to rethink dinner plans. Maybe raise your own chickens or stock up on Mexican imports like tequila and pinto beans. At least they haven’t been dragged into this mess—yet.
Tariffs Tango Escalates!
Currently, the U.S. has imposed $250 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods, with more to come if China doesn’t change its policies. China has retaliated in kind, causing an intense economic standoff.
But this isn’t just a two-player game. Trump’s tariffs now extend to 31 countries, affecting $12 billion in imports and costing American households up to $2,400.
How Many Pizzas for $900?
Trump’s trade conflicts could cost Americans $915 each, or $2,400 per household. That’s not just pizza money—that’s “skip Christmas” money.
The Global Stage: A New World Order?
The U.S. and the English language may not always reign supreme. With other countries gaining power, it’s time to rethink how we approach languages and cultures.
The world is becoming more interconnected, and learning other languages is no longer just a nice-to-have skill—it’s essential for staying relevant in business, building relationships, and understanding different worldviews.
China’s Language Game Plan
For decades, China has made learning English a top priority. But they’re not stopping there. Now, they’re also adding Spanish to their educational curriculum. In fact, Chinese students even compete in Spanish-speaking contests in their schools and universities.
While China’s kids are mastering the world’s three most important languages—Spanish, English, and Mandarin—what’s happening here in the U.S.? Are we doing the same for our children?
