From Love to Hate, Just One Step Away?

From Political Paradox to Your Own Point of View

Can you disagree with a politician’s rhetoric and still support him at the ballot box?

What makes some Hispanic voters support Donald Trump, despite the contradictions that others see in his relationship with Hispanic communities?

Welcome to KDF Spanish Writing Workshop

Where the discussion doesn’t end when class is over. It becomes an opportunity to write, think critically, and make your case

These are among the questions explored in The Oxymoronic Hispanic-Trump Paradox, the second part of our discussion of Trump’s relationship with Hispanic America.

Following our earlier discussion of Trump Sucker-Punches Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll take the conversation a step further. This time, the focus is on developing your own ideas, organizing your arguments, and expressing your perspective in Spanish.

Choose a Question That Interests You

The two articles explore related themes from different perspectives. Together, they raise questions about Hispanic identity, political loyalty, economics, religion, abortion, and the competing priorities that can influence political choices.

You don’t have to address every topic—or agree with the arguments presented in the articles.

Express Yourself in Writing

Instead, choose a question from the accompanying questionnaire that interests you. You may also ask the instructor for a suggestion or discuss an alternative question.

Your task is to develop your own position, support it with reasoning, and express your ideas in Spanish. You might agree with an argument, challenge it, or arrive at a conclusion of your own.

The objective isn’t to reproduce the instructor’s opinion. It’s to develop and communicate yours.

Develop Your Argument in Spanish

For this workshop, you’ll prepare an essay of 300–600 words in Spanish.

You’ll work through successive drafts, developing your ideas and refining the way you express them. The process gives you an opportunity to organize your argument, improve your vocabulary, and make your meaning clearer before presenting your final version.

Your first draft should reflect your own thinking and your own words. As you revise, you can refine your arguments, explore more precise expressions, and incorporate feedback.

Your Perspective & Your Voice Matter

The instructor’s role is to help you communicate your ideas more effectively in Spanish—not to replace your opinions, rewrite your argument into someone else’s, or decide what you should think.

Detailed assignment instructions, including the drafting process and submission deadlines, will be provided separately in Spanish.

Present Your Essay, Make Your Case

Once your final essay is ready, you’ll read it aloud during the workshop.

You’ll have approximately 7–10 minutes to present your work, followed by questions and discussion with the group. Other participants may agree with your reasoning, challenge an assumption, or introduce a perspective you hadn’t considered.

How Will You Respond?

Can you clarify your argument, defend your position, or reconsider an idea when someone offers a convincing counterargument?

That’s where writing and speaking come together. You’ve had time to prepare your ideas, but the conversation still requires you to listen, think, and respond in Spanish.

The goal isn’t to win every argument or persuade everyone to agree with you. It’s to express yourself clearly, engage with different perspectives, and become a more confident communicator.

Who Should Participate?

This workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced Spanish learners who want to go beyond routine conversation and develop their ability to express complex ideas.

You don’t need to be a political expert or a professional writer. You do need to be willing to examine a question, develop an argument, revise your writing, and participate in a discussion.

Practicing Meaningful Spanish

You may leave with your original opinion intact—or discover that someone else’s perspective has given you something to think about. Either way, you’ll have practiced using Spanish to do something meaningful.

At Kasa de Franko, we believe language is more than vocabulary and grammar. It’s a way to explore ideas, understand different perspectives, and make yourself understood.

Bring your ideas. Make your case. ¡Hablemos!
