Read, Think, Discuss & Make Your Case
You don’t need another conversation about the weather. And you certainly don’t need another hour of answering the same textbook questions you’ve answered a hundred times before.
Practice Spanish Through Ideas Worth Discussing
Let’s try something different. Imagine you’ve read an article about a controversial issue before class.
You arrive with your own opinion, ready to explain why you think the way you do. Someone else has a different take. Another person brings up an angle you hadn’t considered. Suddenly, you’re not just practicing Spanish.
You’re in the middle of a real conversation, and you’ve got something to say.
Welcome to KDF Spanish Debate Meetups
where a reading is just the beginning. We explore ideas, question assumptions, exchange opinions, and discover what happens when language learning gives us something worth talking about.
Politics, culture, history, language, current events—we can go in many directions. The common denominator? A topic that gets us thinking and gives us a reason to put our Spanish to work.
A Reading Gives Us Something to Discuss
Prepare Before the Meetup
Each Spanish Debate Meetup revolves around a topic and a reading selected by the instructor. You’ll receive the material beforehand, giving you time to explore the subject, become familiar with useful vocabulary, and arrive with ideas of your own.
You don’t have to be an expert. You don’t even have to agree with the author. In fact, disagreement can make things more interesting. Just come prepared to think, listen, and participate.
Let the Discussion Begin
The reading gives us a common starting point, but it doesn’t dictate where the conversation has to go.
We might examine an author’s argument, question an assumption, or discover that a seemingly simple issue is anything but simple. You make a point; someone challenges it. Can you explain your reasoning? Can you see where the other person is coming from? And can you do it in Spanish?
That’s Where the Meetup Comes Alive
We’re not following a script or racing through a list of textbook questions. We’re exploring an idea together, and the discussion can take us somewhere none of us expected.
Put Your Spanish to Work in Context
Knowing a word is one thing. Finding it when you need it to make your point is another.
You might know exactly what you want to say in English, only to discover that the Spanish version isn’t quite ready to come out. So you try another expression, explain the idea differently, or improvise until you get your meaning across.
That’s Communication in Action
Our discussions give you opportunities to explain opinions, ask questions, follow other people’s arguments, and respond as ideas emerge. You’ll encounter new expressions and sentence structures along the way, without turning the meetup into a grammar lecture.
Grammar matters. Vocabulary matters. But the real test comes when you have something to say and someone is waiting to hear it.
Don’t Just Translate Words, Transfer Ideas
At Kasa de Franko, we want you to move beyond translating every word in your head and become more comfortable expressing ideas directly in Spanish.
You may not express an idea exactly as you would in English, but you can still communicate it. That’s progress, not failure.
No Need to Be Fluent!
You don’t need perfect Spanish to participate, and nobody expects you to know everything about the topic. Bring the Spanish you have, listen to what others say, and build from there.
Think in Spanish, question in Spanish, disagree in Spanish! You’re here to use the language, not wait until you’ve mastered every last verb tense before opening your mouth.
Different Views, Better Conversations
Every meetup brings a new subject to the table. We might explore language and identity, examine a cultural tradition, discuss a political controversy, revisit a historical event, or question something people often take for granted.
Some topics are lighthearted; others may challenge your assumptions. You might leave with your original opinion intact, or you might reconsider something you thought was settled. Either way, you’ve had a chance to hear perspectives beyond your own.
And no, a good discussion doesn’t require everyone to reach the same conclusion. We’re not here to manufacture consensus. We’re here to exchange ideas, make arguments, listen, and learn—including from people who see things differently.
Who Will Enjoy These Spanish Debate Meetups?
These meetups are especially suited to intermediate and advanced Spanish learners who want to move beyond routine conversations and express their ideas with greater confidence.
You don’t need to be a politician, a historian, or a walking encyclopedia. You need an interest in the topic, an open mind, and a willingness to participate—even when you have to work a little to find the right words.
The goal isn’t to speak perfectly or win every argument. It’s to communicate effectively, explore ideas, and enjoy a conversation that goes beyond the usual small talk.
Bring Your Spanish and Join the Conversation
Read, think, agree, disagree, and discover something new. Each Spanish Debate Meetup is an opportunity to explore a subject, exchange perspectives, and put your language skills to practical use.
At Kasa de Franko, language isn’t something you leave in a textbook. It’s something you use to understand people, explore the world, and make yourself understood.
So, what do you think? Come ready to share your point of view—and prepared to hear someone else’s.
¡Hablemos!
