Let’s Discuss & Write About the Results of This Tough Love Affair

When Politics Becomes a Love Affair

Well, well, well… It seems Donald Trump and Hispanic voters have quite a complicated relationship.

On one hand, there’s the tough talk about immigration, border walls, deportations, and all those promises to put America first. On the other, there’s Trump’s repeated declarations of affection for Hispanics—and the support he’s managed to attract from some Hispanic voters.

So, what’s going on here? Is this political romance the real deal, a marriage of convenience, or a relationship that neither side can quite figure out?

Now that the midterm election results are in, it’s time to take a closer look at this unusual political affair. Are Hispanic voters standing by Trump? Would some reconsider their relationship? And what might their choices tell us about the political priorities of Hispanic communities in the United States?

Love Is Blind, But Is Politics?

Let’s not pretend that voting decisions are always straightforward. Immigration may be a major issue, but it’s hardly the only one. The economy, jobs, security, family values, cultural identity, and personal beliefs can all influence someone’s vote.

So, how do we explain Hispanic support for a president whose rhetoric and policies have often put him at odds with Hispanic communities?

Are voters prioritizing the economy over immigration? Do they support his policies but dislike his rhetoric? Are some simply fed up with the Democratic Party? Or are we making the mistake of assuming that Hispanics should all think and vote alike?

A Political Romance Worth Examining

This isn’t about telling anyone whom to love, whom to hate, or whom to vote for. It’s about looking beyond campaign slogans, political labels, and convenient assumptions to understand what’s actually happening.

We’ll examine the election results, explore the motivations behind voters’ choices, challenge some common assumptions, and exchange perspectives. We’ll ask uncomfortable questions, consider different explanations, and see whether the evidence supports the stories people have been telling about this political relationship.

Agreement is optional. Having something interesting to say is not!

Practice Spanish & Discover Something New

This workshop is also an opportunity to put your Spanish to work. Not by memorizing another list of vocabulary words, but by expressing your own ideas, developing arguments, and putting your thoughts into writing.

  • ✍️ Write on the spot: Respond to questions independently, using pencil and paper—not ChatGPT or other AI tools.
  • 🧠 Think for yourself: Organize your thoughts, make predictions, and develop arguments without having someone else do the thinking for you.
  • 🗣️ Discuss and debate: Share your opinions, challenge other perspectives, and defend your arguments.
  • 📚 Expand your vocabulary: Learn to express complex political and social ideas with greater precision.
  • 📝 Turn ideas into an article: Develop your initial responses through discussion, feedback, and revision, working toward a polished article to be published online.

You’ll have your dictionary, your classmates, and your instructor to help you along the way. But during the initial writing exercises, the ideas and the words must be yours. That’s how we discover what you can really do—and where you can take your Spanish next.
