Free Spanish Lessons this Memorial Weekend!
If you got through Winter’s icy grip and are not drier (and deader) than a mummy in an Egyptian tomb, then you’re ready for summer baby. Kasa De Franko offers Free Spanish Lessons for Memorial Day — might as well start now instead of saying you will later. You know how that usually goes.
Memorial Day holiday marks the unofficial start of summer when the livin’ is easy, the sun starts blazing, and there’s nothing better than a weekend of soakin’ some up in a country that boasts the most powerful military in the world.
In the U.S.A. we have a reason to celebrate and many veterans to thank who died in battles throughout American history.

¡Fiesta, cerveza y tacos!
We are inviting adults to try a free beginner group class (yep, even if you only know “hola,” “fiesta,” “cerveza,” and “taco”).
And if those are the only words you’ve got… honestly, you’re already halfway to surviving summer — or at least to getting very drunk and ending up with a big panza (belly).
Yeah, summer’s here. Get ready to enjoy your…

Free Spanish Lessons for Memorial Day?

Something for the Whole Familia
Thinking this is just for grownups? ¡Para nada! (At all!)
Kasa de Franko isn’t just throwing fiestas for adults—we’ve got the little ones covered too.
🎒 Summer Camps for Kids: Spanish + play + culture = one summer they won’t stop talking about. Our camps mix games, music, and movement to get kids talking (in Spanish!) without even realizing they’re learning.

So yes—while the grownups sip cervezas and brush up on their fiesta vocab, and the kiddos are dancing salsa with sticky fingers and big smiles, we’re all gearing up for that long weekend energy.
Because let’s be real…What do you think Memorial Day is really about?

Only drinking beer & B.B.Q—ing?
Memorial Day is one of those U.S. holidays when everyone travels at once, buys a bunch of stuff they don’t need, fires up the grill, and—let’s be honest—finds an excuse to blow shit up.
It’s the perfect excuse to get hammered, kick back, pay respects, and enjoy life with the people you care about.
And yeah—for a lot of people, that means drinking beer and barbequing… I mean, honoring the veterans who’ve died in battle.
Besides those three things, there’s more.

A Day to Not Go to Work!
The perfect holiday to break out whatever American flag gear you’ve got, dress like Uncle Sam, and warm up your voice to yell “U.S.A., U.S.A.” until you’re red, white, and blue in the face—while buying more meat than you realistically need.
A day to skip work, lie around, get absolutely wasted… or maybe—just maybe—brush up on your español.

What’s Not to Love about Memorial Day?
Home Depot’s dropping prices lower than Kim Kardashian’s neckline—appliances, grills, power tools—the whole setup.
Meanwhile, millions of people across the U.S. are packing up and heading out, fueled by overpriced gas and a whole lotta American spirit.
All this, in honor of those who protected our freedom to twerk, talk trash, and barbecue in peace.
But before we get too deep into the BBQ sauce… let’s add one more thing to the mix.

Let’s Back It Up: What Is Memorial Day?
Spoiler alert: it’s not just about day-drinking, mattress sales, or kicking off summer a little early.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday dedicated to honoring the U.S. military personnel who died while serving their country.
So yeah—between the hot dogs, beers, and questionable fireworks decisions… there’s something real behind it.

It Started as “Decoration Day”
Back in 1868—just a few years after the Civil War—people were still dealing with the emotional wreckage of a country that had basically torn itself in half.
So Union veterans created something called Decoration Day—a time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags.
The first big gathering happened at Arlington National Cemetery, where around 5,000 people showed up to honor more than 20,000 soldiers.
No BBQs. No beer coolers. Just people trying to make sense of a whole lot of loss.

New York Makes It Official
By 1890, New York became the first state to officially recognize Decoration Day as a public holiday.
Other northern states followed. But in the South? Not so fast…
Turns out, even in remembering the dead, the country wasn’t exactly on the same page.
Different names. Different dates. Same grief—just… handled differently.

The South Had Other Plans
Southern states like Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, and South Carolina weren’t exactly lining up to join in.
Instead, they created their own Confederate Memorial Days—different dates, different reasons, same idea… just pointed in another direction.
And to this day, a handful of Southern states still observe separate days to honor Confederate soldiers.
Yeah… still a thing.

When Did It Become Memorial Day?
The name “Memorial Day” started gaining traction after World War I, when the holiday expanded to honor all Americans who died in any war—not just the Civil War.
It took decades, but in 1971, Congress made it official. Memorial Day became a national holiday, set for the last Monday in May.
Because yeah… long weekends in America aren’t going anywhere.

From Reflection to Road Trips
What started as a solemn tribute slowly evolved into the unofficial kickoff to summer.
These days, Memorial Day is a strange, very American mix of honor, gratitude, hot dogs, and explosives.
You get parades and pool parties. Somber speeches and six-packs. Military tributes and mojitos.
And honestly… that’s kind of beautiful.

In the present day, there are festive parades held in many towns featuring veteran groups, the National Guard, cute poodles and random K9’s dressed in American regalia, as kids have the time of their lives riding on wagons and launching candy at people’s heads who clearly do not have the reflexes for it.
You’ve got folding chairs lined up since 6 a.m., people guarding their “spot” like it’s beachfront property, and that one guy who salutes everything that moves.
Somewhere, a marching band is slightly off beat, a dad’s already three beers in before noon, and a kid just took a Tootsie Roll to the eye.
It’s loud, it’s chaotic, it’s a little ridiculous—and somehow it all works.

U.S.A.
If you like the taste of freedom, enjoy spilling B.B.Q. sauce all over your clothes, and getting well-oiled while barking at the moon, then you’re already on your way to a solid Memorial Day.
So while you’re at it… why not use that extended weekend to do something slightly more productive than your third plate of ribs?
Like finally learning some Spanish.
Kasa De Franko’s online classes might not stop you from overcooking the burgers—but at least you’ll sound good ordering a cerveza while doing it.

Our Veterans: Our Fallen!
At Kasa De Franko, throughout the year we express our gratitude to our soldiers and those who contributed to the greatness of this nation we call home: The United States of America.
If you want more of that side of things, check out our pieces “Veterans Day: Big Holiday!” and “Celebrating American Leadership”—some stories in there people don’t talk about enough.
Now here’s the pivot—While we’re honoring the past, why not build something for yourself too?
Dive into Spanish. Pick up something real. Something useful.
Because yeah… freedom’s great—but being able to actually talk to more of the world?
That’s a power move.
And let’s be honest—Spanish isn’t called the language of love for nothing.

Spanish is Romance!
If you’d like to learn some romantic words and phrases in Spanish, dive into our blog section: ‘Things Spanish People Say in Bed’.
Feeling a little more bold? Go check out Unlock the Art of Dirty Talk in Spanish Bedroom, Enjoy the Dirty Secrets of Peru’s Erotic Ceramics, Dancing in Bed To Raunchy Dirty Spanish Magic, & Sexy Spanish: The Love Language for $9.50/hr!
That’s where things get a bit spicier—you’ll pick up smooth lines, a few cheeky phrases, and even how to say “I love you” in Spanish without completely messing it up.

Interested in Legends and Folklore?
Take a walk through our “Legends & Folktales” section—this is where things get weird (in a good way).
We’re talking la Santa Muerte, la Llorona, la Ciguapa, El Sexi Chupacabras, and a bunch of other characters that have been creeping around Hispanic storytelling for generations.
Some are dark, some are wild, some are just straight-up strange—but all of them give you a deeper feel for the culture behind the language.

Looking to Laugh, Not Fall in Love?
Yeah, Spanish can get funny real quick.
You’ve got harmless stuff like “¡Feliz Año Nuevo!”… and then there’s the other side of the language that can go off the rails if you’re not careful such as “¡Me Gusta la Chucha de tu Madre!”,
That’s why we keep things fun—but also real. Language isn’t just words, it’s culture, tone, and knowing when not to say something.
If you want to see how we approach it, check out our “About” section—and don’t forget to grab your complimentary lessons at Kasa de Franko.
