In 1885, the federal government officially designated February 22nd as a federal holiday to honor the first President of the United States. Washington’s Birthday quickly gained popularity as a day to recognize and celebrate the contributions of the nation’s founding father.
Presidents’ Day: A Federal Holiday
Presidents’ Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971: The evolution of Washington’s Birthday into Presidents’ Day took a significant turn in 1971 when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was enacted. This legislation aimed to provide more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers by moving the celebration of Washington’s Birthday to the third Monday in February. The change was part of a broader effort to encourage retail sales and tourism.
Celebrating Washington and Lincoln
The date, the third Monday in February, was chosen to honor both Washington’s February 22nd birthday and Lincoln’s February 12th birthday: While the holiday retained its original purpose of honoring George Washington, the decision to shift the celebration to the third Monday in February had an additional purpose. It was intended to include Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is on February 12th.
