The Origins of Presidents’ Day
Believe it or not, Presidents’ Day wasn’t always the glorious three-day weekend we all cherish. Back in 1885, it was just Washington’s Birthday—because, let’s be honest, George was the MVP of early America.
But over time, people thought, why stop at just one president? (Maybe they felt bad for the others.) So, the holiday expanded to celebrate all U.S. presidents, giving us Presidents’ Day—and, more importantly, a much-needed break in February.

Presidents’ Day: A Federal Holiday…
And an Excuse for a Long Weekend! Ever wonder why Presidents’ Day always lands on a Monday? You can thank the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, which aimed to provide workers with more three-day weekends.
Originally, Washington’s Birthday was celebrated on February 22nd, but Congress moved it to the third Monday in February, creating what we now know as Presidents’ Day—a perfect blend of honoring our leaders and enjoying a long weekend.

Celebrating Washington and Lincoln:
Two for the Price of One! While the federal holiday is officially known as Washington’s Birthday, many states have expanded the celebration to honor both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthdays are in February.
This shift not only pays tribute to two of America’s most iconic presidents but also offers a convenient three-day weekend for reflection, retail therapy, or simply sleeping in.
Legacy of Washington & Lincoln

G. Washington: The OG of American Leadership
Before he became the face of the dollar bill, George Washington was out there doing the real work—leading the Continental Army to victory against the British and securing America’s independence. No big deal, right?
As the first U.S. president, Washington had to figure things out from scratch, setting the tone for every president who followed. He established key traditions, including the idea that presidents shouldn’t cling to power forever—hence, his famous decision to step down after two terms. (Looking at you, future politicians.)
And let’s not forget his Farewell Address, where he basically said, “Be careful with political parties and foreign entanglements.” Did America listen? Well… not exactly. But his words still echo through history, proving that Washington wasn’t just a war hero—he was a visionary.

A. Lincoln: The Man, the Myth, the Top Hat
Leading the country through its darkest hour, Abraham Lincoln faced the Civil War head-on, determined to preserve the Union and end slavery. His leadership during this turbulent time cemented his place as one of America’s most revered presidents.
In 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, a game-changing move that declared enslaved people in Confederate states free. It wasn’t an instant fix, but it was a massive step toward abolishing slavery and pushing civil rights forward.
Then there’s the Gettysburg Address—just 272 words, yet one of the most powerful speeches in history. In it, Lincoln reminded Americans what the country was really about: equality, democracy, and the idea that government should be by the people, for the people. Safe to say, his words still echo today.
